Surfacing
Surfacing is a critical component of any recreation space and adds a complementary, finished feel.
Poured-In-Place
Most poured-in-place surfacing uses a combination of rubber granules and a cushion layer of shredded rubber bonded with a polymer, providing a seamless surface that can be poured between and around play equipment.
Bonded Rubber Mulch
Bonded rubber mulch consists of a single density pour of shredded rubber mulch blended with polyurethane adhesive binders. This surfacing looks and feels less smooth than poured-in-place, but that extra texture can add a much needed visual element to any space.
Engineered Wood Fiber
Engineered wood fiber surfacing is a popular choice for surfacing because it tends to be much less expensive than poured-in-place or bonded rubber mulch. The wood fibers create a loose fill surface that “knits” together to form a stable and accessible surface playgrounds and other recreation spaces.

More Resources
Each year in the United States, more than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger are treated for playground-related injuries.
No other innovation has had as great an “impact” on playground safety as surfacing. From the dirt and grass of the early days to today’s complex engineered poured-in-place materials, much has been done to increase the safety and freedom of our children as they play.
Not all surfaces are equal, however, and what works for a large destination park may not work for a small pocket park with a few swings and a climber. Choosing the correct material for your space can be difficult, but Garrett Parks + Play can help you make sure your choice conforms to all ASTM and CPSC standards and helps your project shine.
